About a month ago, a newer company called Elete sent over some electrolyte products for us to try out. I'd heard of this company before and knew they had some really unique products do offer. Even though this particular supplement is great for all riders, I had also heard it really worked well for those who cramp up fairly easy. With that said, I searched out a few of my fellow riders who've had that trouble and asked them to try some of the samples. Here's a response from Jim Holler, a strong rider whom I've know for years...
When Cycling Underground was looking for someone to test the new Elete electrolyte supplement they were thinking, “Who is the most likely to cramp up??... Holler...
Anyone, and there are many, that have witnessed one of my cramp episodes can attest to the severity and pain. It is not a fun time. Over the last year I have been almost cramp free thanks to a number of factors including per ride, ride and post ride actions. One of the keys to success is an electrolyte supplement. Here is an outline of the regiment I have developed that works for me:
1) Reduce caffeine the day of a hard ride. I love coffee but it acts to dehydrate your system.
2) Start to hydrate a few hours before the ride. I try to take in at least 32 OZ of a sports drink.
3) Fuel, eat smart before the ride and take some type of food like a power bar with you to eat on the ride.
Avoid fatty or rich foods.
4)
Stretch!
5) Loosen up. I have found that I need about 10 miles of spinning before a hard effort. What is your number?
6)
Drink during the ride. I use a combination of powdered Gatorade, water and an electrolyte supplement. Gatorade alone will not work. Drink often and a little at a time. Don’t try to save fluid for the end of the ride. Your water bottles should be empty for the last few miles.
7) Spin out the last few miles to work out any lactic acid build up. Do not go hard to the end of the ride and hop of the bike hot.
8) Post ride. I drink one recovery drink about 16 OZ and then water until I have to relieve myself. You will be surprised how much water it can take on a hot day after a hard ride.
9) Stretch. Keep moving.
I was reluctant to change this system in any way and risk cramping but Matt asked so I risked it. I used the Elete electrolyte supplement this week on a warm Tuesday night ride. You just add the correct amount of fluid to your water bottle. I made sure that the effort was hard to get myself into the cramp risk zone. I am happy to say that that the new supplement worked very well. Not even a twinge or pre cramp feelings. This product worked well for me and I can, as my team’s most likely to cramp champ, recommend Elete electrolyte supplement. You guys got any more?
